Senior Editor, The Choice and The Learning Network, The New York Times,
Jacques Steinberg is the Senior Editor of The Choice (nytimes.com/thechoice), The New York Times's college admissions blog, which he created for the paper in spring 2009; he is also senior editor of The Learning Network (nytimes.com/learning), a Times blog for teachers and students that is written by two former New York City public school teachers. Recently, he launched a standing feature on a third Times blog - "The Choice on India Ink'' (india.blogs.nytimes.com/tag/the-choice-on-india-ink/) - an attempt to engage an Indian audience on the process of applying to American colleges and universities.
Mr. Steinberg has been a journalist at The New York Times for more than two decades.
He is the author of "The Gatekeepers: Inside the Admissions Process of a Premier College," a New York Times-best seller and Times Notable Book that was published by Viking in September 2002. He is also the author of "You are an Ironman: How Six Weekend Warriors Chased Their Dream of Finishing the World's Toughest Triathlon,'' which was published by Viking in September 2011.
He received the Fred M. Hechinger Grand Prize for Distinguished Education Reporting from the Education Writers Association, for a year-long Times series he set inside a New York City third-grade classroom, as the students learned to read.
While much of his career at The Times has been spent as an education reporter, Mr. Steinberg took a break from writing about classrooms and teachers from 2003 to 2008 to write about television and other media for the paper. He graduated in 1984 from Dartmouth College, where he majored in history and edited the student daily, The Dartmouth.
