Prior to current position, Mr. Yamanaka worked as Vice Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
Previous to that job he was Director-General of the Elementary and Secondary Education Bureau (2010-2012), Director-General of the Minister’s Secretariat Office (2009), Director-General of the Sports and Youth Bureau (2008), Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
He also worked as Director of the Education Rebuilding Committee of the Prime Minister’s Office.
He joined the Ministry in 1977 and worked for divisions in charge of education, culture, sports, science and technology as Director or in other positions prior to said posts
He is a chairman of GB of the Teaching and Learning International Survey of OECD.
He was an associate professor at the School of International Business and Law, National University of Yokohama, Japan (1992-1995).
He has a LL.B, the University of Tokyo.
