Padma is a veteran foreign correspondent who has nearly 30 years of experience with the foremost international media in ten countries. She has filmed New York extensively as a reporter with German Television Network (ARD) in New York and news features for ARD New Delhi. She has reported in NY for Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF), was an English and German editor for German Press Agency (dpa) and the South Asia bureau chief for Europe’s largest magazine, Der Spiegel of Germany for 14 years till 2012.
She has also been the New York correspondent for Outlook and the Herald Tribune and her investigative reportage on Diego Garcia appeared in 50 years: Foreign Correspondents published by Penguin. She has covered wars, terror attacks and natural disasters and interviewed some of the most prominent personalities in the world. Her book, “Sri Lanka: The New Country” (HarperCollins 2015) based upon her coverage of the civil war for 16 years and research in post-war Sri Lanka has received excellent reviews.
She has also written for Die Welt, Handelsblatt, SonntagsZeitung (Switzerland) and Wiener Zeitung Austria. She was a keynote speaker on India in Madrid at the invitation of the Govt of Spain, in Munich for Airbus/EADS and in Lucerne for the European Futurists of Switzerland. She is a former elected president of the Foreign Correspondents’Club of South Asia (FCC) and on a presidential advisory board for the same. Padma also writes and speaks native-level German, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu and can save her life in French.
