Shahana Basu is an acclaimed international corporate lawyer with extensive global experience in advising and managing multinational companies. She is currently the Director – Legal & Regulatory of Max India Limited and provides strategic direction and leadership to the legal and regulatory functions of Max India Limited, Max Financial Services Limited and Max Ventures and Industries Limited. Max India Limited is a part of the USD 2 billion Max Group and is the publicly listed holding company for Max Healthcare Institute (a joint venture between Max India Limited and South African Life Healthcare Group), Max Bupa Health Insurance (a joint venture between Max India Limited and UK based healthcare services expert, Bupa) and Antara Senior Living. Prior to the Max Group, Shahana was the Global General Counsel of Amira Nature Foods Ltd., an international packaged food company listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
Before moving in-house with corporations, Shahana worked with the top international law firms such as Sullivan & Cromwell LLC and Linklaters LLC in the US and UK, respectively, before becoming a Partner in the Business Law Department and Chair of the South Asia Practice Group at Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge (EAPD), a full service, global law firm in Boston. She has an impeccable academic pedigree with a BA in History with First Class Honours from Hindu College, Delhi University, a Tripos in Social & Political Sciences with First Class Honours from Trinity College, Cambridge University, an MA in Sociology with the Highest Honours from the University of Chicago and a JD from the Yale Law School.
Shahana is deeply interested in academic/theoretical issues related to law and business and she loves teaching. She is passionate about education and serves as a mentor and role model to women who wish to pursue higher education. Shahana has served on the Executive Board of the Yale Law School and is a member of the University of Chicago India Alumni Board. She has published several articles, has taught seminars and has been a speaker at the Yale Law School, Harvard Business School, Harvard Kennedy School of Public Policy and Global Jindal University on cross border transactions, mergers & acquisitions, regulatory and compliance and governance issues. She serves as an Independent, Non-Executive Director of Voith Paper Fabrics India Limited and is an advocate of greater participation by women on corporate boards to ensure diversity of views.
Shahana has received numerous national and international awards and honours, including being awarded the Leadership Excellence Award 2017, Star Echelon for being a leader in the Indian legal field and being named as a Trailblazer amongst the Finest In House General Counsels by the Indian Corporate Counsel Association in 2016. She was included in The Legal 500 GC Powerlist: India 2016that recognizes the quality, excellence and innovation shown by leading General Counsels in India as nominated by law firms and in-house counsel globally, and through research carried out by The Legal 500. She was named in the list of the top 500 Powerful Women in the Law in India in 2016-17and also named, along with Amartya Sen, Amar Bose and Desh Deshpande, as one of the "50 Most Influential People in New England" by India New England in 2011.
